What we will be doing in Dolphins in June 2014

What are we doing in Dolphins in

June?
Some of the children have been talking about going away and how they get to their destinations, the children also enjoying looking at the different vehicles that drive into the car park. So this month we will be looking at travelling and different types of transport,

The activities this month will be based around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning:
Prime areas:
PSED: For the children to play in a group extending & elaborating play ideas, (e.g. building up a role play activity with other children) PD: Jump off an object and land appropriately. C&L Questions why things happen and give explanations, ask who, what, when and how.
Specific areas:
L: Ascribe meaning to marks that they see in different places. M: Show an interest in numerals in the environment. UW: Talk about why things happen and how they happen. EA&D: Begin to use a variety of construction materials.

Some of the activities we will be doing this month to support this will be:
·         Different ways to travel. Manjit will be looking at different ways of travelling with the children including sea travel and travelling by train, Manjit will be taking groups of children on trips on the train, and help support the children to make tickets and boats.
·         How they move. Shilpi will be helping the children to understand how different vehicles move using pictures and videos and expanding their vocabulary by introducing new words.
·         Junk Modelling. Christine will be supporting the children to use a variety of materials including boxes, tape, card and fabric to create junk model vehicles.
·          Large scale construction. Matt will support the children to build large scale models using themselves, chairs, boxes and string.
·         Travel Agents & Airport role play. Marie Claire will set up a travel agent in the home corner and an Airport in the garden and help support the children to participate in role play alongside their peers.
·         How we travel around the world and ages. Abongi will being showing the children what transport is used around the world and has been used in past times.
·         Transport Collage. Emma will assist the children to create collages using pictures of different modes of transport.

What you could do to support your children at home:
·         Look at holiday photos. Look at holiday photos and talk about how you got there, if you went to a different country talk about what modes of transport they use in that country.
·         Take a trip on public transport. Take a trip on a bus, train, tube or tram, talk to your child about the journey and how people can travel from one place to another, let them help you buy the ticket or top up the oyster card,

·         What can you spot? While walking or driving to nursery see how many different modes of transport you and your child can spot, ask your child questions about colours and shapes you can see, (e.g. what colour is that car, what shape are the wheels on that bike, how many wheels does that bus have.)

What Sea Turtles are doing in June 2014

What are we doing in Sea Turtles in June?
In Sea Turtles the children have loved learning new songs about growing and planting, and have enjoyed playing along with musical instruments and exploring sounds and creating their own songs. This month we will be exploring stories, songs and music and movement. We will be using story sacks, music from around the world and musical instruments along with learning new actions and moves to go with the songs and music.

The activities this month will be based around the Early Years
Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning:
Prime areas:
PSED: Share the experience of learning new nursery rhymes and songs with their friends PD: Develop fine motor skills by repeating actions to rhymes and songs. C&L: Expand their vocabulary by learning new songs, rhymes and words.
Specific areas:
M: learn rhymes with numbers, counting and noticing when something has been taken away.
UW: Begin to enjoy pictures and stories about themselves, their families and other people
EA&D: create puppets, images, learn new rhymes, dressing up and exploring new songs and rhymes.

Some of the activities we will be doing this month will involve:

·         Movement flash cards. Sarah will create some movement flash cards to use with the children to get them to try different movements, such as jumping, shaking and hopping.
·         Music time. Alice will support the children to explore the different sounds of a variety of musical instruments.
·         Story and rhyme sacks. Laura will make story and rhyme sacks to use with the children.
·         Musical instruments. Afia will support the children to create their own musical instruments using a variety of materials and use them in circle time.
·         Junk modelling. Using a variety of resources and materials Christina will help the children to create props for action songs and rhymes such as the wheels on the bus.
·         Music and movement. The children will explore movements large and small to music in the garden.

Some ideas to support your children at home:

·         Play some music. Whether you are in the car, house or garden play some music, songs or rhymes and sing, dance and move along to it with your child.
·         Story & rhyme sacks. Create your own story or rhyme sack, choose one of your child’s favourite stories or rhyme and gather items from around the house that could be used as props for that story or rhyme, or make your own puppets, masks and flash cards. Place them in a bag or box ready to use.
·         Story time. Spend a quiet 10 minutes a day sitting looking at books together encourage them to point to their favourite pictures in the book and to repeat words from the story after you.

What we did in Dolphins in April 2014

In April the Dolphins children learnt about how living things change and grow. We looked at both how plants grow and how we ourselves grow and change

Emma helped the children to plant some spring time seeds and bulbs in the garden.  The children really enjoyed getting their hands dirty and taking responsibility for helping to look after their seeds by watering them.

Marie Claire helped the children to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly by introducing baby caterpillars and getting the children to watch them grow and change into butterflies before releasing them into the wild, along with looking at books about caterpillars and drawing pictures of the caterpillars.

The Preschool children looked at different animal life cycles such as frogs and chickens. They had a lot of fun carrying out some experiments with eggs.  The unanimous favourite was the unbreakable egg experiment!

What did SeaTurtles do in April

This month we have been growing and planting inside and outside. We extended on this topic from last month when the children were interested in fruits and vegetables, looking at how they grow.

Before we started to get into the gardening theme,  we took a small group of children on a trip to   Homebase to collect the tools we needed to do our gardening .  We bought bags of soil, seeds, spades etc. Children enjoyed smelling the flowers at the garden centre, especially after finding the strawberry  plant! The children looked at the different gardening clothes we might use, trying on gloves to protect our hands.

After collecting our equipment we got into the full swing of things by planting sunflower seeds. Children enjoyed placing gloves on their hands to protect from the soil. Over the month we started to watch our plants and flowers grow and sprout up. Children enjoyed looking everyday to see if there were any changes.  The job the children loved the most was using the watering can to water the plants,  and using them in the water-play.
This month we also created a mud area in the garden, the children enjoyed digging and exploring their senses through finger play.
The children planted ‘peas’ and watched them sprout, they then got to take them home to continue to watch them grow.
Children created fruit and vegetable pictures, exploring the textures of the fruit by touching and feeling.   This helped to add new words into their play.
